Email Marketing Starter in Indonesia

Review sender setup and list handling, then build an initial local-language nurture sequence. Focused on Indonesia.

Research, channel development and digital marketing support

Indonesia had 230 million internet users in October 2025, an internet penetration rate of 80.5 percent of the population. Commercial email to that audience falls under two laws at once, the Electronic Information and Transactions Law and the newer Personal Data Protection Law, and requests for consent have to use Bahasa Indonesia. The Email Marketing Starter for Indonesia reviews your list and platform against those requirements and builds an Indonesian-language sequence for your buyers.

Email marketing rules in Indonesia

Indonesia governs commercial email through its electronic transactions law and its personal data protection law together.

The Electronic Information and Transactions Law (UU ITE) and Law No. 27 of 2022 on Personal Data Protection (UU PDP), in force since October 2022 with a two-year adjustment period that ended in October 2024, both apply to commercial email. A lawful basis and transparency are required when personal data is used in commercial communications, and where consent is the basis, the request for consent must use Bahasa Indonesia.

Consent can be withdrawn at any time and processing must then stop within 3 x 24 hours, so every commercial email needs a working unsubscribe mechanism that is honoured promptly. Contact provenance matters: a list assembled without a documented consent basis is a compliance risk regardless of how the platform classifies it, and unclear segments should be resolved before any sending begins.

Bahasa Indonesia emails generally perform better with an Indonesia-market audience than English or machine-translated content. The sequence has to match the buyer’s stage and terminology, and it should be reviewed in the platform’s actual layout, because copy that reads well in a document can look different in an email client. The existing platform also needs to support the language, unsubscribe flow and audience rules before the build starts.

How the Starter works in Indonesia

The core setup, applied to Indonesian consent rules, language and platform fit.

Audience and notices

We document contact provenance, intended use and the privacy information that applies to the audience, with consent records in Bahasa Indonesia. Segments with unclear provenance are resolved or set aside before use, rather than included now and reviewed later.

Indonesian-language messages

We match the sequence to the buyer’s stage and terminology and write the approved copy directly in Bahasa Indonesia. The content is reviewed in the platform layout before approval, so formatting and wording issues are caught before anything is sent.

Platform fit

We check that your existing tool supports the required language, unsubscribe flow and audience rules before building the sequence. Where it falls short, the gap and the options are documented, since a platform migration is a separate piece of work.

Sender authentication

We configure or review SPF, DKIM and DMARC for the sending domain inside your platform, coordinating DNS changes with the domain owner. Authentication supports delivery, although recipient engagement and mailbox-provider decisions also play a part in where messages land.

What to watch for in Indonesia

These are the most common email compliance and performance gaps for Indonesia.

Using a purchased or unverified list

A purchased or scraped list has no documented consent basis and is a compliance risk under UU ITE and UU PDP. The Starter does not build a sequence on an unverified list, and inherited lists are reviewed segment by segment instead.

Consent records only in English

UU PDP requires requests for consent to use Bahasa Indonesia. Consent requests that exist only in English do not meet that requirement, so the Indonesian versions are prepared as part of the list review.

Machine-translated copy

A literally translated English sequence reads as translated and tends to underperform with Indonesian readers. The sequence is written directly in Bahasa Indonesia for the target buyer and checked in the live layout.

Setup findings

The current sender configuration, the authentication and platform changes recommended or made, and any outstanding dependencies such as DNS changes waiting on the domain owner. The findings explain why each item matters for delivery and who is responsible for it.

Initial sequence

The approved copy for the initial nurture sequence, written in the target language and built in your platform for the selected audience, with market-specific labelling and unsubscribe handling applied. Test results for links, rendering and opt-out behaviour are included.

Handover notes

The audience rules, suppression handling, testing results and approval path for future sends, together with the structure and rationale of the sequence. Your team can use the notes to maintain the setup and build further sequences in the same way.

Frequently asked questions

Practical answers for planning your marketing brief.

Do consent records have to be in Bahasa Indonesia?

Yes. UU PDP requires requests for consent to use Bahasa Indonesia. The request for consent has to use Bahasa Indonesia, so an Indonesian version is always included, with English alongside it where the audience needs it.

Is inbox placement guaranteed?

No. Authentication supports delivery, but recipient engagement, complaints, reputation and mailbox-provider decisions also matter.

Do we need to change email platforms?

The starting point is the client’s existing platform. Feasibility and any required changes are assessed during scoping.

Can we use a list we bought or inherited?

A purchased or scraped list rarely carries a consent record that covers your marketing and should not be used. An inherited list can be reviewed: segments with a documented consent basis may be usable, and the rest need re-permission first.
