Distributor Shortlist in Vietnam

Identify and compare potential distributors or agents against an agreed market and category brief. Focused on Vietnam.

Research, channel development and digital marketing support

Vietnam recorded 195,100 newly registered enterprises in 2025, up 24.1 percent on 2024, with total registered capital of VND 1,919 trillion, according to National Statistics Office data. A registry growing that quickly makes it easy to find companies with a matching trading licence and hard to tell which of them actually distribute in your category. A Distributor Shortlist for Vietnam checks registration, category activity and market presence for each candidate before it reaches your outreach list.

Finding distributors in Vietnam

Registration data, market presence and territory each tell part of the story about a Vietnamese candidate.

The National Business Registration Portal confirms whether a candidate is an active, registered entity with business lines that match the target category. It is also where a company’s legal name can be reconciled with the trading name it uses in the market, which often differ. A relevant business line is only a starting point, though, because many companies register broad trading activities they do not actually pursue.

Market presence has to be confirmed separately. Store checks, marketplace listings on Shopee, TikTok Shop and Lazada, and B2B presence show whether a candidate is really operating in the category, and which brands and customers it serves. For import-heavy categories, customs trade data can indicate whether a candidate already has relevant import experience.

Territory is the third test. Traditional trade and smaller regional distributors are under-represented in e-commerce and formal registry searches, which matters if your target territory lies outside Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The provinces, customer types and after-sales capabilities you need are therefore built into the search from the start rather than checked at the end.

How the shortlist is built in Vietnam

The core search, applied to Vietnamese registries, marketplaces and territories.

Company identity

We use Vietnamese registration information to confirm each candidate’s active status and to reconcile its legal name with its public business identity. Registered business lines are compared with the target category, and mismatches are noted rather than ignored.

Category activity

We look for relevant products, brands and route-to-market evidence in stores, on marketplaces and in B2B channels, rather than relying on a broad trading description. Candidates with experience in an adjacent category are identified as such, so their fit can be judged on its merits.

Import experience

For import-heavy categories we use customs trade data, where available, to gauge whether a candidate already imports relevant products. That helps judge whether it can handle the import procedures and volumes involved, and it is weighed alongside the other evidence.

Territory fit

We identify the provinces, customer types and after-sales capabilities relevant to your brief and assess each candidate against them. Where the territory is outside the two largest cities, the search deliberately extends beyond online sources so that regional distributors are not missed.

What to watch for in Vietnam

These are the most common ways a Vietnam distributor search goes wrong.

Registration mistaken for operation

A company appearing in the registry with a relevant business line is not necessarily an active, trading distributor. Market presence is confirmed separately before any candidate is shortlisted, and candidates that cannot be confirmed are flagged as such.

A scraped list presented as a shortlist

A list pulled from a trade directory has not been checked for registration status, category fit or reachability. Every candidate on the shortlist is individually reviewed, and the evidence notes show what was checked and when.

Ranked candidate list

Profiles of the candidates assessed against consistent selection criteria, with a ranking that shows how each one fits your category, territory and scale requirements. The candidates to prioritise for outreach are identified, along with the reasons they stand out.

Evidence notes

For each candidate, the sources used, the dates they were checked, the supporting observations about market presence and scale, and any checks that remain unresolved. Your team can see at a glance which points are confirmed and which still need diligence.

Next-step brief

The candidates to approach first, the questions to raise in early conversations and the points to verify before any agreement, such as permissions, capacity and existing brand commitments. It is written so that the list can be handed straight into outreach.

Frequently asked questions

Practical answers for planning your marketing brief.

Does the search cover distributors outside Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City?

Yes, where your territory requires it. Regional distributors are often under-represented online, so the search extends beyond marketplaces and registries to find them.

Will candidates be contacted on our behalf?

Commercial outreach and meeting arrangements are not included in the research scope. Agree any contact-validation or introduction activity explicitly.

Does registration prove a distributor is suitable?

No. Registration is one input. Category experience, capacity, permissions and commercial fit require evidence and may need further diligence.

Can the shortlist cover more than one category or market?

Each shortlist is built for one category in one market, so that the criteria and evidence stay comparable. Further categories or markets are scoped as separate searches.
