Law No. 8 of 1999 on Consumer Protection sets the baseline requirement for truthful advertising, and Etika Pariwara Indonesia, the industry’s advertising ethics code amended in 2020, sets further standards for ad content. Neither is specific to online search, but both apply to ad copy, so claims are reviewed against them before a campaign goes live. Advertising regulation is changing elsewhere in the region, so the position is checked again close to launch.
Conversion tracking and remarketing audiences fall under Law No. 27 of 2022 on Personal Data Protection (UU PDP), and where consent is the basis, the request for it must use Bahasa Indonesia. Measurement set up without that consent basis may produce data the business cannot safely use, so tracking is configured with the consent flow in place from the first day.
Language and geography decide relevance. Indonesian buyers search with Bahasa Indonesia product terms and, in some categories, English vocabulary as well, while keywords imported from a home-market campaign often have little to do with local demand. Targeting also has to match real delivery coverage: a campaign aimed at all of Indonesia when the business can only serve Jakarta or parts of Java generates enquiries it cannot fulfil.
